SLAVEN SURFBOARDS.

AGE: 65.

40 YEARS SHAPING.

In the early days of his shaping career working at the Rip Curl factory, he watched and learned from legends including Donny Alcroft and Bob McTavish. Since creating his own labels, including Brute Force and now Slaven Surfboards, Ross' days in the shaping bay can involve boards ranging from grom performance thrusters, to retro singles and twins, to longboards and logs.

ICONIC SURFER SHAPER IN THE 80’S.

24/7 DING REPAIR SERVICE.

When Ross started surfing, Torquay's culture was in its infancy, having a permanent population of fewer than a thousand. These days, Ross is a revered figure in the Victorian surfing community. His family’s incredibly warm and well-liked, and his boys shape and surf impressively. Ross was kind enough to invite us into his home to shoot this clip, and humoured us as we tried to elicit the location of the perfect waves plastered on the walls of his shaping bay.

I think that competitors in those days, were searching for the opportunity to become surfer shapers. We wanted to be a good enough shaper so that we can ride boards that we really want to ride. That era were just so particular about their boards, there was just such a special part about creating your own competitive success.
